RALPH J. SLUTZ
Retired CU-Boulder researcher Ralph J. Slutz of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences died of natural causes on Nov. 16 at Boulder Community Hospital. He was 88.
Dr. Slutz was born on May 18, 1917, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Earl Ransom Slutz and Edna Lee Davis. He married Margaret Mary Mitchell on June 1, 1946, in Maplewood, N.J. The couple had lived in Boulder since 1954.
He received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1938, and his master's degree in electrical engineering from MIT in 1939. He earned his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Princeton University in 1946.
Dr. Slutz served in the Office of Scientific Research and Development, attached to the 8th Air Force, from 1943 to 1945. He worked for the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton from 1946 to 1948.
In 1948 he joined the National Bureau of Standards, where he worked until 1980. He joined CIRES at CU-Boulder in 1980 and retired from UCB in 1990.
Dr. Slutz earned a gold medal from the Department of Commerce, SEAC Computer Design, and was a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America.
He enjoyed genealogy studies, travel and music.
He is survived by his wife of Boulder; a brother, Leonard Slutz of Cincinnati; a daughter, Karen Huston, of Clinton, Utah; three sons, Rob Slutz of Loveland, Eric Slutz of Fort Collins, and Don Slutz of Milford, Mass.; and 15 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Philip Slutz of Hackensack, N.J.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today at Mountain View United Methodist Church, 355 Ponca Place, Boulder.
